G8 Pledges to Support Deforestation & Forest Degradation Reduction Efforts, Stop Illegal Logging

While the G8 was collectively patting itself on the back for passing what are, from a scientific standpoint, some pretty wishy-washy emission reduction pledges, it did add an encouraging section into its statement on climate change: One acknowledging the huge impact of deforestation on climate and pledging to take strong action to prevent deforestation and forest degradation. Here’s part of the text of that statement:

Aware that deforestation accounts for approximately 20% of annual CO2 emissions, and that forests are an essential repository of biological diversity and key to the livelihoods and rights of many people, we remain engaged in seeking the reduction of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and in further promoting sustainable forest management globally.

The statement went on to say that the G8 would support incentives in developing countries to reduce deforestation such the UN Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, and the Forest Carbon Partnership.

Furthermore the G8 will continue to support conservation efforts and sustainable management of forests as set out in the Bali Action Plan. Illegal logging and trade in illegal timber will be combatted through the promotion of transparent timber markers and support of trade in sustainably produced timber.
