January 28, 2010 – SustainableGrocer, a third party monitor of sustainable practices in the food and grocery industry, has announced that Costco will be the recipient of their 2009 Sustainable Grocer of the Year Award for their implementation of energy efficiency projects and company-wide recycling programs.

Every year SustainableGrocer recognizes organizations which demonstrate responsible and verifiable steps towards more sustainable practices. This year, Costco was chosen for their work in dramatically increasing the number and variety of organic produce offered to consumers, reducing packaging waste and their use of renewable energy sources on some stores. Additional achievements include:

  • Efforts in energy reduction
  • Recycling programs for both consumers and employees
  • Private label principles, buying practices, packaging and value
  • Corporate social responsibility

Visit the SustainableGrocer consumer corner to hear what others are saying about why Costco should have (or shouldn’t have) been given this year’s honor.
