Famed Urban Culture Artist BUA, Comes Home To New York, For His First NY Show: An Art Exhibition, At Pop International Galleries.
New York (March 9, 2010) – Artist Justin BUA is universally recognized as the artist of the Hip-Hop world. With more than 3 million posters sold of his “Distorted Urban Realism” celebrating DJ’s, Break Dancers and names like Michael Jackson, BUA may be the most recognizable artist of his generation. On Thursday, March 25, 2010 BUA will come home for his first NY art exhibition, presented by Pop International Gallery.
Born on the same very streets in New York’s Upper West Side that gave rise to the pioneers of the music, dance and
art that later become known as Hip-Hop, BUA brings an intimate knowledge of the world he celebrates in paint. BUA himself was one of New York’s earliest B-Boys and a member of the first break dancing crews to perform in major venues across the world.
Having grown up a latch-key child in this poor community, BUA’s first canvases were the city walls around him. But with studied appreciation for the classical masters, paper and canvas soon replaced brick and cement. His talents took him first to Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts and later took him away from home to America’s leading school of visual arts, Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design. And today alongside his celebrity art career, he teaches classical figure drawing at the University of Southern California.
BUA’s masterful paintings, infused with both the rhythms of the street and classical training, tell the tales of urban life through his cast of city muses. It is for this reason that he is the biggest living name in poster sales, collected by literally millions of fans, ranging from street kids to art connoisseurs, to celebrities and Presidents. His art and name have become ubiquitous with authentic urban style, as seen through his collaborations with EA Sports video games, special edition shoes, music videos, books, animated TV shows, and the credits go on.
Now more than two decades later, New York’s own Pop International Gallery has brought Justin BUA back home to the city he’s become famous for painting.
Pop is a perfect host for this show being both a New York institution of its own, and the leading gallery in the world for many of New York’s earlier giants in popular cultural art, such as Andy Warhol and Keith Haring.
Along with BUA’s most noted works of dancers, musicians, DJ’s and the characters of the street, BUA will be unveiling his latest work, a portrait of the legendary Jay Z. This works first seen here will later be a feature piece in a second book to be published by Harper Collins later this year.
