April 2, 2010 – The world’s second largest parcel delivery company revealed this week a pilot program which will bring four new all-electric delivery vehicles to the U.S. market. The company will begin use of the trucks, which it had built from the ground up optimized for all-electric usage, in Los Angeles beginning this June.

FedEx will be ordering these vehicles from two different suppliers in order to evaluate the different technologies’ performance for future fleet expansion. Two of the trucks will be manufactured in Indiana by Navistar, and FedEx is leveraging its partnership with Modec in Europe for vehicle design. The company is currently using 10 Modec-designed vehicles in London and has ordered 5 additional trucks for their Paris couriers. All the vehicles are being designed with a range that allows most delivery drivers to complete their full 8 hour shift before the vehicle needs recharging, a huge boon to efficiency as fill-ups are unnecessary and they do not need to design shorter routes to accommodate the new vehicles.

This latest expansion reinforces FedEx’s commitment to alternative vehicle use in their fleets, and their leadership position in Sustainability. They currently have over 1,800 alternative energy vehicles in use around the world, including the entire Bronx, New York fleet. In addition to the new vehicles in Los Angeles and Paris, their California fleet, based in Oakland, will be adding 10 hybrid vehicles within the year. The company’s current efficiency goals include a 20% fuel efficiency increase by 2020 across its entire fleet.
