Recycled Art: Junkyard campers create recycled sound sculptures

Conservatory-trained percussionist Donald Knaack, alias The Junkman, leads some 40 kids from Memphis through the construction of the Junkyard Museum’s first permanent exhibit on Broad Avenue. Kids, who were at the museum for the Junkyard Art and Music Camp, created a sound sculpture from recycled lawn ornaments, pipes and coffee cans, with three percussion playstations – just in time – for the end-of-the-week concert.
Knaack believes it was a learning experience for kids. He further says:
We talk about the environment a lot, because it’s all recycled material, so it’s appropriate. We ask kids to look at their daily lives and look at ways they can save money and energy: cutting your shower time in half or turning the water off when you wash your hands or brush your teeth.
The team also piled up some plastic tubs, license plates, pipes, coffee cans, old pots and pans, and a large piece of farm equipment. The farm equipments were converted into a wooden xylophone and a drum set.
