June 29, 2010 – At the TEDxOilSpill conference yesterday in Washington D.C., where leading thinkers gathered to discuss spill mitigation, cleanup efforts and our energy future, the X Prize Foundation took the stage to announce their latest effort – a “special X prize” for the best cleanup solution for the Gulf Coast’s waters and shoreline.
The contest was announced by the X Prize Foundation’s Vice President of Prize Development, Francis Beland, and will come with the usual X Prize benefits, most importantly $10 million. While the contest is still in planning stages, Beland said that the Foundation hopes to launch the contest in the next 2 weeks.
Beland urged entrepreneurs to email him directly with cleanup ideas (contest entries) and ideas on how to best structure the contest at francis[at]xprize.org. Further details will be announced in the coming weeks, and the X Prize Foundation website will have the most up-to-date information.
One of the major questions about the prize is whether BP will allow the winner to implement their technology or solution in the Gulf. According to Fast Company, the oil giant hasn’t had the best record of taking outside suggestions over the last few months.
