August 13, 2010 – Procter and Gamble announced today that they will begin using plastic derived from renewable resources, specifically sugarcane, to package many products in their beauty and grooming line including Pantene Pro-V, Covergirl and Max Factor Brands in the coming years.
The move by P&G will become a significant development in the industry as they leverage their market reach and scale to deliver results. The new packaging is an improvement over traditional high-density materials because it is derived from a renewable resource (sugarcane), whereas traditional plastics are derived from a non-renewable resource (petroleum). The packaging will remain 100% recyclable in municipal facilities.
The company will be sourcing the sugarcane plastic from Brazilian firm Braskem SA, who manufactures the product using ethanol made from sustainably-grown Brazilian sugarcane. P&G will roll-out the new packaging over the next 2 years and we can expect to see the first products to hit the shelves early next year.
